Volunteers of America to Provide Homes and Services to Vulnerable Veterans
Funding will benefit nine programs that serve hundreds of male and female veterans nationwide
ALEXANDRIA, Va. (June 25 2019) – Building on almost a decade of partnership in service to thousands of U.S. military veterans, The Home Depot Foundation has pledged $2.1 million in new veteran housing grants to Volunteers of America to address the critical needs of former service members. Since 2011, the Foundation has given nearly $17 million to Volunteers of America in support of better housing for veterans and their families.
The latest grants support nine Volunteers of America housing programs in six states. This funding will help improve or build up to 319 affordable and supportive homes specifically for veterans, including a dozen earmarked for women veterans. Volunteers of America is one of the nation’s largest nonprofit organizations addressing the needs of veterans. Nationally, it serves more than 40,000 veterans annually who are homeless or at-risk of homelessness.
Affiliates and housing programs receiving new grants in 2019 from The Home Depot Foundation include:
- Volunteers of America Colorado Branch (“Clermont Commons”): Rehab of transitional housing for 12 female veterans in Denver
- Volunteers of America Florida (“Veterans Village of Marianna”): New construction of permanent supportive housing for 36 veterans in Marianna, Fla.
- Volunteers of America Florida (“Mobile Veteran Home Repair Van”): Mobile repair van that will allow for the rehab of five to 10 homes owned by veterans throughout Florida
- Volunteers of America Florida (“Arbor Place Apartments”): Rehab of permanent supportive housing for 32 veterans in Tampa
- Volunteers of America Greater Los Angeles (“Veterans Service Center – Transitional Housing & Recuperative Care”): Rehab of a warehouse to create transitional housing and recuperative care for 30 veterans
- Volunteers of America Greater New York (“Commonwealth Avenue Veterans Residence”): Rehab of 149 permanent supportive apartments for veterans in New York City
- Volunteers of America Illinois (“Hope Manor Village”): New construction of permanent supportive apartments for 38 veterans and their families
- Volunteers of America Texas (“Veteran Home Repair Program”): Rehab of 20 homes owned by veterans
- Volunteers of America Southwest (“Hawley Veterans Service Center & Transitional Housing”): Rehab of supportive housing and improvements to disability access for 12 veterans in El Cajon, Calif.
To date, The Home Depot Foundation has funded 120 Volunteers of America projects benefitting veterans and provided more than 3,800 homes, including almost 550 homes specifically for women veterans and their families. In addition to the grants, Team Depot, The Home Depot’s associate-led volunteer force, has donated time and materials to complete more than 100 projects to improve Volunteers of America’s veteran housing facilities.
