ALEXANDRIA, Va. April 18, 2019—Following a year of continued and robust growth, Volunteers of America (VOA) has been ranked by Affordable Housing Finance as the 29th-largest developer of affordable housing in the United States on the magazine’s 2018 AHF 50 list – a significant jump from 2017, when the organization ranked 46th on the annual list. Volunteers of America ranked 4th overall among nonprofit developers on the 2018 list.

Holding steady from the year before, VOA also ranked 5th on AHF’s 2018 list of the top 50 affordable housing owners, and 2nd among all nonprofit owners. The organization maintains a portfolio of almost 21,000 units at 509 properties throughout the U.S., providing homes to approximately 25,000 people. The magazine stated that “Volunteers of America completed several acquisitions last year, including its entry into a large workforce housing property in Dallas and the first part of a multiproperty, multistate ‘swap’ of properties with a nonprofit peer organization.”

In 2018, Volunteers of America started construction on 353 units of affordable housing, completing 144 units. As part of its developer ranking, Affordable Housing Finance stated about VOA, “As the nonprofit has been focusing on places where it can have significant impact, it also looks to expand in the Austin, Dallas, and Houston markets of Texas; the Minneapolis and St. Paul markets; and Puerto Rico.”

Nationally, Volunteers of America is one of the largest nonprofit developers and providers of affordable housing in the United States. VOA is also one of the nation’s largest nonprofit providers of affordable senior housing, skilled nursing care and assisted living for seniors.

As part of its national organization, the affiliated Volunteers of America National Services (VOANS) provides health, housing and supportive services, employing more than 3,000 professionals across the country to operate its housing and health care programs. It operates six comprehensive campuses (skilled nursing and independent/assisted living), five skilled nursing facilities, four assisted living facilities, three licensed home health agencies, three Programs of All-Inclusive Care for the Elderly sites and one senior meals program.
